Coating Consumption on a Test Panel: Separate Bottle Loss from Film Applied

The amount missing from a coating bottle is not automatically the amount retained as a cured film on a test panel.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The amount missing from a coating bottle is not automatically the amount retained as a cured film on a test panel. Product can remain in the applicator, transfer to removal towels or be lost through handling. Define which quantity is being measured before using consumption figures to make a thickness claim.

Choose a clear measurement boundary

For a practical usage study, record the bottle or dispensing assembly consistently before and after the trial using suitable equipment and safe product handling. Follow the supplier's requirements for closure and exposure. Changes in packaging, caps or weighing conditions can confuse a small difference.

Record the treated area, application procedure, applicator changes and visible losses. Keep the method repeatable and do not deliberately overapply merely to produce a measurable difference. If volume is calculated from mass, a valid product-specific density is needed; do not assume every liquid has water's density.

Label the result as consumption under the recorded process. It describes how much product left the measured supply, not how much cured material remains on the panel.

Avoid an unsupported film calculation

Dividing bottle loss by panel area does not by itself establish cured coating thickness. That interpretation would require an appropriate model and validated information about retained material, composition and measurement uncertainty. Obtain a suitable laboratory method when thickness is the actual question.

Use the consumption study for its practical purpose: comparing reproducible application workflows and planning stock. Report repeat trials and variability rather than a single precise-looking number. Keep spills and interrupted applications visible in the record. Clear measurement boundaries make a modest workshop study useful without turning it into a claim that its equipment and design cannot support.
