Finish Polish and Distinctness of Image: Judge Edge Clarity

Brightness and image clarity are different aspects of a polished finish. A panel can reflect substantial light while the edges of reflected objects remain blurred. Finish-polish evaluation becomes more useful when it examines those edges as well as the overall shine.

Use a controlled reflected object

Choose a straight-edged target or suitable light shape and keep the viewing geometry consistent. Compare the same area before and after the finishing test, after compatible residue removal. Include a second inspection view for fine scratches.

Distinctness of image, or DOI, describes reflected-image clarity in appearance measurement. A visual target can illustrate the idea, but it does not provide a calibrated DOI number. Use an appropriate instrument and its method when a numerical claim is required.

Separate fine marring from larger texture

Finish polish may improve appropriate micro-marring that reduces clarity. It should not be expected to eliminate every distortion caused by orange peel, panel shape or deeper texture. Those features need separate diagnosis and may lie outside the agreed correction scope.

If a reflected line remains wavy after fine haze has been reduced, more finish polishing is not automatically justified. Compare the original texture record and inspect the wider panel before continuing.

Evaluate the finishing test

Record whether the target edge becomes easier to distinguish, whether fine marks reduce and whether the result remains consistent from nearby views. Keep lighting and exposure stable so the comparison is not dominated by a brighter after photograph.

Do not use a high gloss-meter reading as proof that reflected-image clarity is perfect. Gloss and image-quality measurements address different properties, and their relationship depends on the surface.

The practical acceptance statement can remain qualitative: ‘Cleaner reflected edges with reduced fine haze under the reference views; original texture retained.’ That is more defensible than an invented percentage increase in mirror finish.

Finish polish earns its place when it improves the intended appearance without chasing structural features that the process is not meant to remove.
