Fine cut and medium compound overlap in some practical tasks, but their labels are not universal specifications. Compare the complete processes on the actual paint rather than decide from the product category alone. The better choice is the one that reaches the required finish consistently.
Identify the target marks and the retained defects. Review the paint condition and history before testing stronger options. A label such as medium does not establish a safe removal allowance or a guaranteed finishing result.
Choose supported pad and machine combinations for each liquid. If the manufacturers recommend different methods, record those differences. A practical system comparison does not require forcing both products through an identical unsuitable recipe.
Use comparable areas and the same inspection standard. After each process, record visible defect reduction, fine haze, cleanup effort and whether another finishing stage is needed.
| Outcome | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Fine cut meets the goal cleanly | Heavier work may be unnecessary |
| Medium compound saves time but needs refinement | Compare total labour and finish |
| Both leave the same isolated marks | Reassess the defects and scope |
| Results vary across panels | Establish panel-specific references |
Do not choose solely by which liquid removes the first visible scratch fastest. Pad changes and recovery work can reverse the apparent efficiency advantage.
Keep exact product names, pad models, methods and photographs in the test record. State the paint and conditions to which the decision applies. ‘Fine cut was better’ is less useful than a description of the accepted result and why it met the task.
If neither process gives a stable finish, return to preparation, pad condition and paint compatibility before introducing more stages. A clear diagnosis is more valuable than repeatedly moving up and down a cut chart.
The category names help organise a range. The cleaned surface and total accepted workflow decide which product belongs on the job.
