A heavy-cut estimate that includes only machine time is incomplete. Refinement, pad maintenance, residue removal and inspection are part of the service. Reserve time for those tasks before deciding that a more aggressive first stage is commercially efficient.

Build the estimate from an accepted test

Time the complete sequence on a representative area. Separate cutting, refinement, cleanup and verification so the source of labour is visible. Include access changes for awkward panels rather than multiplying a convenient bonnet test across the whole car.

Do not treat a single test as a guaranteed production rate. Repaired paint, complex geometry and different starting damage can alter the work. Record those uncertainties and use them to define the estimate’s scope.

Compare total labour

Consider this illustrative example: process A takes eight minutes to cut, nine to refine and five to clean and inspect. Process B takes twelve minutes to cut, five to refine and three for cleanup and inspection. The totals are 22 and 20 minutes respectively. The faster cutting stage is not the faster accepted process.

These figures are not NANOLAB test results or recommended cycle times. They demonstrate how to structure a comparison using measurements from your own work.

Keep a rework allowance visible

Reserve capacity for an unexpected panel response or an inspection failure. That is planning, not permission to repeat cutting indefinitely. Every rework decision still needs a defined defect, a suitable process and a reason the paint condition supports more work.

If the job consumes the allowance early, reassess the scope and communicate the finding. Do not silently remove refinement time to protect the original estimate. A glossy but hazy handover creates a quality problem, not a labour saving.

Track the accepted process and actual time after completion. Over several comparable jobs, the record can improve estimates without imposing a fixed recipe on every vehicle. The useful commercial measure is the cost of a verified finish, with retained defects and limits clearly stated.
