Architectural Glass Surface Numbers: Identify the Face Before Requesting a Coating

Glass surface numbers identify faces within a glazing construction. Use the supplier's drawing to identify the proposed treatment face instead of describing it only as inside or outside.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

Pilkington's glossary numbers surfaces from the weather-facing side. In an insulating unit, some numbered faces are within the sealed construction and are not accessible for a site-applied treatment.

Practical checks

  1. Obtain the glazing construction and orientation.
  2. Mark the exposed face proposed for treatment.
  3. Confirm its existing coating and care restrictions with the glass supplier.

Example

Illustrative example: a project note says coat the inner face, but the team has not distinguished the room-facing surface from a cavity-facing surface. A numbered drawing removes that ambiguity before product selection.

Scope and limits

Do not open or modify a sealed glazing unit to reach a face. This guide does not approve a nano coating on any specific glass construction.
