Reference White and Black in Colour Measurement: Preserve the Calibration Routine

A colour instrument's reference routine belongs to the measurement method. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the correct references, their condition and the required sequence before comparing coating samples.

The key distinction

A clean-looking reference is not automatically an acceptable reference, and a completed software prompt does not explain how it was handled. Keep the reference identity and instrument record together. If a check is questionable, resolve it before interpreting small differences between treated and untreated samples.

Practical checks

  1. Use the specified reference components for the instrument and method.
  2. Inspect and handle them according to the manufacturer guidance.
  3. Record unsuccessful checks and repeat measurements only after the cause has been addressed.

Example

Illustrative example: a comparison shifts after the instrument is moved to another work area. Before concluding that the coated sample changed, the operator reviews the reference routine, positioning and sample conditions. This prevents an equipment or setup issue from being promoted into a product claim.

Scope and limits

Do not clean a reference with an improvised chemical or substitute a visually similar surface. This guide does not provide an instrument-specific calibration procedure. The current manual governs the routine, and a suspected damaged reference should be assessed through the appropriate service or laboratory process.
