Coating Manufacturer Selection: Compare the Questions Suppliers Ask You

A supplier's questions can reveal whether a recommendation is being matched to the project. Buyers should notice which assumptions are being checked before treating a proposed coating as a suitable choice.

The key distinction

Useful questions may concern the actual surface, finish, installer experience, working conditions, packaging and intended customer support. The absence of a particular question does not prove poor capability, but it leaves a gap the buyer should close. Compare the completeness of the technical discussion rather than interpreting confidence or speed as evidence of suitability.

Practical checks

  1. Give each candidate the same project brief and record the clarifications they request.
  2. Identify important information that neither side has established, especially around unusual surfaces or application constraints.
  3. Ask how the recommendation would change if one key condition were different; request the document or trial needed to resolve that difference.

Example

Illustrative example: two buyers ask for a quartz coating, but one serves trained installers and the other sells to first-time users. A recommendation that ignores this difference may require additional work before either buyer can assess fit. The useful outcome is a justified recommendation, not simply a product name.

Scope and limits

Do not turn this exercise into a hidden personality test or a score for how many questions a salesperson asks. Judge whether the resulting recommendation is sufficiently defined, documented and testable for the actual project.
