Micrometres and Nanometres in Coating Reports: Check the Scale

One micrometre equals one thousand nanometres. Preserve the unit when comparing a film-thickness result with a particle-size statement; the numbers may describe both different scales and different physical quantities.

The key distinction

A particle dimension does not automatically establish deposited film thickness. The measurement method and sample state remain necessary even after the unit conversion is correct.

Practical checks

  1. Identify the measured quantity before converting.
  2. Convert micrometres and nanometres with the correct factor.
  3. Keep the original method and specimen description beside the result.

Example

Arithmetic example: 0.5 micrometres equals 500 nanometres. It does not follow that a coating containing particles described as 500 nanometres produces a film of that thickness.

Scope and limits

Do not infer durability or layer count from a unit conversion. A suitable method must establish the actual property claimed for the finished coating system.
