Coating Trial Percentages: Always Show the Sample Count

A percentage conceals how much evidence it represents. Showing the count makes a result easier to assess.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Practical approach

Report the number meeting the criterion and the total evaluated, together with the criterion and test conditions.

A 100% pass rate could mean two of two samples or two hundred of two hundred. These are not equivalent bodies of evidence.

Decision limits

Do not add unwarranted certainty to small samples. State the observed result and the limits of the tested group.
