Coating Measurement Reports: Preserve Instrument Settings

A number without its method settings may be impossible to reproduce. Saved settings are part of the measurement record.

Practical approach

Record instrument model, probe or geometry, units, relevant adjustment and software processing choices. Store the original output with the interpreted summary.

Two gloss readings taken at different geometries should not be combined into one trend without clearly identifying the difference.

Decision limits

Do not reconstruct missing settings from memory after a disagreement. Treat the result's interpretability as limited and obtain a properly documented repeat where justified.
