RV Awning Fabric Care: Keep It Separate from Bodywork Coating

Keep RV awning care separate from bodywork coating and confirm fabric, rolling, drying and maintenance requirements with the manufacturer.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

An RV awning combines flexible fabric, seams or joints, hardware and moving parts. A coating chosen for exterior paint is not automatically appropriate for any of those components. Identify the awning model and fabric before adding a treatment to an exterior-detailing package.

Start with the awning manual

Different awnings use different materials and care procedures. Dometic's published guidance, for example, emphasizes appropriate cleaning and drying before extended storage. Use the current instructions for the exact model rather than transferring a recipe from another awning.

Do not assume that a fabric treatment suitable for vehicle seats is approved for an awning. Flexing, rolling, outdoor exposure and existing treatments create a different application.

Coordinate cleaning with the bodywork job

Plan runoff so that awning cleaner does not remain on newly prepared or coated panels. Keep fabric tools separate from abrasive bodywork tools. Operate the awning only through its approved procedure and suitable weather conditions.

If the awning has damage, failed stitching or a mechanism problem, separate repair from cleaning. Water repellency on the broad fabric does not prove that every seam or joint is watertight.

Define any protection proposal precisely

Ask both the fabric-system supplier and treatment supplier about the intended product, application and cure. Include how the awning will be rolled, stored and cleaned afterwards. A demonstration of water beading on a flat sample does not establish performance after repeated rolling.

For an RV handover, provide the awning's own maintenance instructions alongside the body-panel coating instructions. If the exterior coating scope excludes the awning, state that clearly. This avoids an owner applying bodywork aftercare products to the fabric or assuming that a full-vehicle detail has replaced the component manufacturer's care requirements.
