RV Coating Estimates: Why Length Alone Does Not Describe the Work

Estimate RV coating work from area, condition and access rather than vehicle length alone, with clear preparation assumptions.

Vehicle length is a convenient starting point for an RV quote, but it does not capture coated area, access difficulty or restoration effort. Two motorhomes of equal length can require very different amounts of preparation and application work.

Separate the estimating components

Record compatible surface area, condition, height, curves, graphics and excluded components. Slide-outs and complex front caps can change access and labour. Roof treatment should be a separately defined scope based on its material and approved procedure.

In an illustrative area estimate, two sidewalls each 7 m long and 2.5 m high give 35 m² before subtracting windows and exclusions. Front and rear surfaces add further area. This simple geometry is a planning approximation, not a measured guarantee of product consumption.

Price preparation separately

A sound painted finish and a heavily oxidized gelcoat surface may have similar dimensions but different preparation needs. Use a representative approved test area to assess the restoration process and agreed appearance endpoint. Do not assume that every mark can or should be removed.

Include safe access arrangements, movement around the vehicle and the required controlled environment. A low material estimate can coexist with substantial labour and space requirements.

State the assumptions

Show the basis of the estimate and what would trigger a scope revision, such as previously undisclosed repairs or deteriorating graphics. Keep the manufacturer's application rate separate from any allowance for handling loss or test sections.

For the owner, the useful comparison is between quotes covering the same materials, preparation and release requirements. For the installer, the useful record is a repeatable estimating method that can be checked against actual labour and consumption. A price per metre of vehicle length can remain a commercial shorthand, but it should be supported by an inspection rather than replace one.
