Gelcoat or Marine Paint: Why Identification Matters

Two glossy boat panels can have different surface systems. Gelcoat and marine paint may require different cleaning and preparation, so visual similarity alone is not enough to choose a coating workflow.

Start with the vessel’s records

Check builder information, repaint invoices and previous detailing records. Repairs may mean that only part of a hull has been painted. Mark those boundaries on a simple drawing or photograph. If the finish cannot be identified reliably, ask the yard or a qualified refinisher to assess it before using abrasive preparation or solvents.

Match preparation to the finish

Avoid transferring a polishing method from one surface to another just because both are glossy. Follow the finish manufacturer’s care restrictions and confirm that the proposed preparation is compatible with the NANOLAB coating. A small test area should demonstrate acceptable appearance after residue has been removed, not merely while polishing oils remain on the panel.

Keep the finish identity in the handover

Record which areas are gelcoat, which are painted and which remain uncertain. Future cleaners need that information too, particularly if different cleaners or restoration methods are permitted in different zones. When a repaired panel is added later, revisit compatibility for that panel rather than assuming the original coating specification applies unchanged across the vessel.
