Choose between pH strips and a meter according to the required decision, sample limitations and measurement resolution.

pH strips can provide a quick screening result for suitable aqueous samples, while a properly maintained meter can support a more precise procedure. The appropriate choice depends on the decision, sample and required accuracy—not simply on how many digits a device displays.
If the task is to distinguish broadly acidic from broadly alkaline material, a suitable strip range may be sufficient. If a specification requires a narrow numerical interval, a coarse colour chart may not resolve the boundary reliably. A meter still needs calibration, an appropriate electrode and a defined method.
For an illustrative limit of pH 8.0 to 8.5, a strip that changes in one-unit steps cannot confidently separate a borderline sample. Reporting 8.25 from a visual colour guess creates precision the method did not provide.
Strong sample colour, cloudiness or unsuitable solvents can interfere with a strip or electrode method. Follow the manufacturer's limitations. Do not dilute a sample solely to make it easier to read unless the test method specifies that dilution; changing the sample changes the question.
Use the stated reading time for strips and the stabilization procedure for meters. A photograph under coloured workshop lighting is not a reliable replacement for the intended comparison conditions.
Label a strip result as a screening observation. If it triggers concern, confirm with an appropriate method rather than treating the nearest colour block as a laboratory value. Keep the original observation and the confirmation linked.
For coating-care decisions, pH remains only one property of a cleaner. Follow the coating and cleaner instructions for concentration, exposure and rinsing. Neither a neutral-looking strip nor a precise meter reading proves that all other ingredients are compatible with an unknown surface treatment.
