A Coating Consultation for a Car with Partial PPF

Separate painted and film-covered areas and document their different histories.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Partial paint-protection film creates a mixed-surface vehicle. The painted areas and film-covered areas may have different histories and instructions, even when the overall appearance is uniform. A coating consultation should make the coverage boundaries visible before product selection.

Map the coverage

Identify full and partial film panels, exposed paint and relevant trim. Record the known film details and installation history. Mark replaced or repaired areas separately. Do not assume that every clear protective layer on the vehicle is the same film or that all panels were installed together.

Discuss the intended result by zone

Clarify the owner's appearance and maintenance expectations. Review the proposed coating's suitability for each confirmed surface and the film supplier's guidance. For example, a product recommendation for exposed glossy paint should not be carried across the film boundary without checking the intended application.

Preserve the consultation in the job record

Record selected products, instruction references and exclusions. Explain how later film replacement or bodywork may change the treated surface map. Give the owner a concise handover that identifies what was treated rather than describing the whole vehicle only as coated. This supports future maintenance and helps another technician understand the original scope without guessing from reflections or trying to reconstruct the installation history from memory.

Use the PPF boundary as a scope boundary

Mark where film begins and ends, identify the film where possible and record the paint condition outside it. Confirm whether the selected coating is appropriate for each surface and whether separate preparation is required.

The customer may want a uniform maintenance experience, but that goal does not prove that one process suits both materials. Explain any treatment differences and record the installed products by zone. Inspect existing film-edge condition before work so later observations have context. The consultation should produce a clearly mapped service for the partially protected vehicle, with no assumption that a transparent film boundary makes the underlying paint and exposed film technically interchangeable.
