Assess the starting condition

Record what contacted the stainless surface and whether protective pads or tape were used. Clean a small area with the approved method before comparing it with previously exposed metal.

A practical working method

  1. Photograph the dry starting condition.
  2. Separate removable residue from physical marks.
  3. Use compatible cleaning without altering the original grain.
  4. Assess local renewal only after the accepted clean surface is understood.

Common mistake

Polishing a protected patch to match weathered metal can change its finish rather than restore the coating. A wet photograph may hide the relevant difference.

What a useful result looks like

A useful record identifies the contact history and remaining marks. If mechanical restoration is required, treat it as a separate specialist task and revisit the protection plan afterward.
