Planter exteriors may receive irrigation runoff, soil and fertiliser residue. Confirm coating suitability for that exposure rather than relying on a decorative metal claim.

Assess the starting condition

Identify the finish and inspect drains, seams and existing staining. Separate the exterior cosmetic surface from the inside planting system. A coating cannot repair a leaking or poorly draining assembly.

A practical working method

  1. Record representative exposure and the planter’s maintenance products.
  2. Trial suitable preparation on an inconspicuous exterior area.
  3. Keep coating away from unapproved soil-contact or drainage areas.
  4. Inspect the dry finish after normal watering and cleaning.

Common mistake

A short water test does not represent repeated fertiliser exposure. Treating the entire planter also extends the application beyond its agreed decorative scope.

What a useful result looks like

The useful result preserves appearance within the verified system’s limits. Resolve runoff or drainage issues separately and retain a cleaning routine appropriate to the actual residues.
