Polishing Pad Identification When Printed Labels Wear Off

Assess the starting condition

Compare the pad with its original packaging, purchase record or supplier information. Several manufacturers use similar colours for different cutting levels and machine types. Check backing condition and signs of contamination at the same time.

A practical working method

  1. Record new pads by product code, dimensions, machine compatibility and intended stage.
  2. Use a storage label that stays with the pad set without damaging the working face.
  3. Quarantine unidentified pads instead of putting them into the finishing tray.
  4. Confirm any proposed replacement in a test area before customer use.

Common mistake

Guessing that a red pad must be a finishing pad treats a brand-specific visual system as a universal standard. A pad’s wear can also change its behaviour.

What a useful result looks like

The useful endpoint is a traceable pad selection and repeatable workshop process. An unidentified pad is cheap compared with correcting an avoidable finish problem; replace it if its provenance cannot be recovered.
