Machining Marks on Aluminium Before Nano Coating: Preserve the Intended Finish

Tool marks may be part of a supplied aluminium appearance or evidence requiring finishing review. Confirm the intended outer surface before introducing polish or nano coating.

Read the finish requirement

Obtain the component information and identify whether the exposed surface is bare aluminium, anodised, painted or otherwise treated. Record the accepted machining appearance where specified. A metallic look alone does not identify the coating-contact surface.

Separate appearance from defects

Inspect and photograph the dry part under relevant conditions. Ask the responsible supplier which marks belong to the intended finish. Do not automatically polish the component to match an unrelated smooth sample.

Confirm preparation and product use

Use methods suitable for the actual finish and nano product instructions. Where an approved trial is appropriate, assess residue removal and dry appearance on a representative area. Keep any finish-changing work as a separate agreed process.

Retain the acceptance record

Document the supplied finish, treated area and care method. At future reviews, compare the same locations with the original reference. Nano coating should not be presented as removing machining geometry or achieving an unmeasured finish specification.

Frequently asked question

Should all visible machining lines be polished away before coating?

No. Confirm the intended finish and appropriate preparation. Removing an accepted texture may change the component rather than prepare it correctly.
