Nano Coating vs Anodising Aluminium

Separate anodising from an additional nano surface treatment on aluminium, and evaluate compatibility with the exact anodised finish and care process.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Anodising is a defined treatment of aluminium, while nano coating is a broad product description that does not identify one universal process. If an aluminium component is already anodised, any added surface treatment must be evaluated against that actual finish and its maintenance requirements.

Identify the anodised system

Obtain the finish specification, colour and care instructions from the component supplier. Ask whether additional sealing, protective products or later repairs are present. A decorative trim piece and an architectural frame can have different finish requirements despite both being aluminium.

Do not interpret the word nano as evidence that a treatment is thinner, more durable or more appropriate than anodising for the component’s purpose. Request product-specific information.

Preserve the original finish during preparation

The Aluminium Anodizers Council’s care guidance highlights the importance of appropriate cleaning and warns against harsh acidic or alkaline cleaners. Use a preparation process permitted for the exact anodised surface rather than an aggressive bare-metal polishing routine.

If the surface is cloudy or discoloured, identify the condition before applying another layer. A coating should not be used to obscure unresolved damage or to claim that the original finish has been restored.

Define the additional coating’s purpose

State whether the trial aims to improve handling-mark removal, simplify a cleaning task or preserve a particular appearance. Use a matching sample and compare it after the required cure and normal maintenance cleaning.

Keep any corrosion, wear or specialised functional requirement separate unless the combined system has relevant evidence. A water-repellent result does not automatically establish those properties.

Make a system-level decision

The choice is often not anodising or nano coating, but whether a specific extra treatment is useful over an existing approved anodised finish. Ask NANOLAB with the finish specification and service conditions in hand. That makes the discussion precise and avoids replacing a known manufacturing process with an unqualified marketing term.
