Pass Count or Working Time in a Polish Trial: State the Comparison Method

Two polishing systems can be compared by an equal working cycle or by the time needed for an accepted result. State which question the trial is designed to answer.

Define the endpoint first

Decide whether the comparison concerns finish after a fixed method or total work required to reach a defined acceptance. Include residue removal and inspection in that definition. Equal machine time and equal finished quality are not interchangeable test designs.

Describe a pass precisely

Record section size, overlap, arm movement and the tool setup. A pass count without those details does not establish equal contact across two areas. Keep the actual paint condition and trial location in the record.

Keep deviations visible

Follow each product’s approved working method. If one system requires a different sequence, explain the difference instead of forcing an unsuitable cycle. Record any additional pad cleaning or repeat treatment that contributes to the finished result.

Report the supported answer

Show the observed finish alongside the method and elapsed work. Avoid declaring one product faster from unequal starting conditions or different acceptance thresholds. Repeat unclear results with an agreed design before changing the workshop process.

Frequently asked question

Can fewer passes prove that a compound is more efficient?

Not by themselves. Compare the actual work and accepted finish under a defined method, including the relevant preparation and cleanup.
