Residue in Pump Sprayers: Prevent an Unplanned Product Mixture

The last contents of a sprayer can affect the next preparation task. A clear bottle wall does not prove that its pump and hose are free of residue.

Identify the previous contents

Keep sprayers assigned and labeled by product or task. If history is unknown, do not assume that rinsing the bottle makes it suitable for a different chemical. Product and equipment instructions should establish the cleaning method and material compatibility.

Include the complete flow path

Residue can remain in the pickup tube, pump, seals and nozzle. Follow the approved cleaning process for the assembly. Do not spray an uncertain mixture onto paint to discover whether it has been removed successfully.

Return the sprayer to controlled use

After cleaning, verify operation on an appropriate test setup and relabel it clearly. Retire an unsuitable assembly rather than adding more product to overwhelm residual contents. Keep preparation sprayers separate from dressings and other tasks likely to transfer unwanted material.

Frequently asked question

Is a water rinse always enough when switching chemicals?

No. The previous product, sprayer construction and approved cleaning method determine what is required.
