Dilution by Volume and Dilution by Weight: Keep the Units Explicit

A dilution instruction should state both the ratio convention and the measurement units. A volume recipe cannot be silently converted to weight.

Identify what the numbers mean

Confirm whether the instruction describes product to water, product in the final mixture, or another convention. Then establish whether quantities are volumes or masses. Write the complete instruction on the working record instead of using an unexplained number such as 1:10.

Use a suitable measurement method

Measure liquid volumes with appropriate clean equipment or masses with a suitable scale when the instructions require it. Products do not all share the density of water. Equal numerical values in grams and millilitres therefore cannot be treated as universally interchangeable.

Label the prepared mixture

Record the product, method, quantities and preparation date where appropriate. Keep the original product instructions available. If a colleague cannot reproduce the mixture from the record, the notation needs improvement before the container is used on a customer surface.

Frequently asked question

Does weighing 100 grams always equal measuring 100 millilitres?

No. That relationship depends on density and the relevant measurement conditions.
