DA Polisher Orbit Size: Long Throw, Short Throw and Panel Access

Choose a DA orbit size with panel shape, backing-plate system and handling in mind instead of assuming a longer throw is always better.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Orbit size describes the tool’s orbital movement; it is not the diameter of the pad. A long-throw machine and a short-throw machine can have different working characteristics even when their pads look similar. Choose them as complete supported systems.

Separate orbit from pad size

Backing plate, pad diameter and orbit are related design choices, but they are not interchangeable measurements. Do not fit an arbitrary smaller plate to a machine merely to make it resemble another model.

Use only combinations supported by the equipment maker. Balance, clearance and attachment matter alongside the visible working face.

Consider the shape of the job

Broad open panels provide different access from narrow pillars, recesses and strongly curved sections. A setup that covers a bonnet efficiently may be awkward around a door handle.

Map the areas the main machine can address comfortably and identify where a smaller approved tool or another method is needed. Avoid forcing one machine into every space to reduce equipment changes.

Compare actual control

During a test, observe contact, movement and the ability to follow the intended overlapping path. On free-spinning machines, inspect rotation behaviour where relevant. More orbit does not eliminate the effect of load or poor contact.

Use the appropriate product instructions for each setup. A dial position or pass count copied between models is not an equal-performance comparison.

Choose for repeatable work

If considering two machines, test them on representative panels with approved consumables and include operator fatigue. Evaluate the clean finish and total work, not just how quickly the pad appears to travel.

For a studio, complementary sizes can be useful when they solve specific access problems. For an individual owner, a manageable supported system with appropriate training may be more valuable than the largest available specification.

The useful question is which arrangement lets you work the actual surfaces consistently, with controlled boundaries and an inspected result.
