Heat Resistance Claims for Nano Ceramic Coatings

Read heat-resistance claims for nano ceramic coatings by checking exposure type, temperature measurement, substrate and the property assessed after heating.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A temperature number without a test description is an incomplete heat-resistance claim. A short exposure, repeated heating and cooling, and continuous service can produce different demands. Define the actual component and use before deciding whether a nano ceramic coating is suitable.

Ask what temperature was measured

Distinguish the heating environment from the specimen’s surface temperature. Identify the substrate, coating application and cure before the test. A result for a laboratory panel does not automatically approve a different component with another finish or geometry.

Avoid assuming that an automotive coating is suitable for exhaust headers, cooking surfaces or other hot applications simply because it is called ceramic.

Identify the exposure pattern

Request the duration, number of cycles and cooling conditions. Ask whether moisture, chemicals or mechanical contact were also part of the service requirement. Heat in isolation may not represent the complete application.

Testing should be designed and performed using appropriate equipment and safety procedures. A flame demonstration is not a substitute for a controlled heat-resistance assessment.

Read the acceptance criteria

Determine whether the coating was judged by colour, gloss, adhesion, visible damage or a defined functional property. A sample that remains present may still have changed appearance or lost the effect required by the customer.

Include the original finish in the assessment. An added treatment does not raise the temperature capability of an underlying plastic, paint or adhesive automatically.

Keep the application approval specific

For a metal cover near a heat source, provide the supplier with the actual service information and finish specification. If those details are unknown, do not invent a temperature margin. A credible recommendation names the approved product and conditions. It does not use a single high number to suggest suitability for every hot surface encountered on a vehicle, boat or household fixture.
