Shower Hinges and Handles During Glass Coating

Glass coating should not automatically extend onto the hinges and handles around it. Hardware may be plated, painted, coated or made from a different metal than its appearance suggests.

Identify the hardware finish

Check the enclosure specification where possible. Record existing staining, corrosion or finish damage before the job. Loose hinges or a door that does not operate correctly need attention from the enclosure installer rather than a cosmetic treatment.

Protect the application boundary

Confirm how preparation products and coating will be kept off unapproved hardware. Use protection appropriate to the finish and avoid flooding joints or moving parts. A successful test on the glass says nothing about compatibility with a nearby plated handle.

Keep maintenance separate

Follow the hardware manufacturer’s cleaning and servicing instructions. Do not use metal polish on a coated or plated fitting unless explicitly permitted. When cleaning the glass, use tools that can move around the hardware without striking it. If marks appear at the boundary, photograph both materials and report the products used before attempting correction.
