Writing Product Claims That a Coating Team Can Substantiate

Create a claim-to-evidence register and distinguish observations from general promises.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Product claims should be traceable to evidence that matches their scope. A coating brand needs to know what each statement means, what supports it and which limitations matter. This is especially important when a narrow observation is turned into a broad marketing promise.

Inventory the actual statements

Collect claims from product pages, labels, demonstrations and sales material. Separate factual product descriptions from comparative or performance statements. Identify terms that are ambiguous, such as permanent, scratch-proof or maintenance-free, rather than assuming every reader interprets them the same way.

Match evidence to the claim

Record the product, surface, method and conditions behind supporting information. A result on one sample does not automatically establish performance across all applications. For example, a photograph of water behaviour can document that observation without demonstrating a particular lifespan. Where evidence is missing, narrow the statement or obtain appropriate review before publication.

Create an approval and review path

Assign a product owner to confirm technical meaning and a publishing owner to control use of the wording. Keep programme terms and limitations accessible when discussing warranties. Review claims when products, evidence or instructions change. The practical goal is a brand voice that remains persuasive because it is specific and defensible. It should not depend on claims that sales staff cannot explain or that require customers to infer conditions never stated.

Build a claim-evidence ledger

For each proposed statement, record its exact wording, intended audience, product, surface, supporting evidence, limitations and approver. Distinguish a measured result from a user observation and from a future evaluation objective.

For example, an installer reporting easier wiping during one trial does not establish a universal application-time reduction. Keep the observation and its conditions rather than converting it into a percentage. If evidence supports only a specific use, keep that scope in the published wording. Review headings and image captions as well as body text, since a cautious paragraph cannot repair an absolute headline. Unsupported claims should remain unpublished until the required evidence is available.
