Testing a New Microfiber Towel on a Sacrificial Gloss Panel

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A sacrificial gloss panel can help compare microfiber towels before they reach a customer's sensitive finish. It provides a controlled place to observe lint, drag and visible marking under a chosen process. It does not certify a towel as safe for every paint system or every type of contamination.

Establish a repeatable comparison

Choose a clean panel with a known finish and inspect it before each trial. Mark test zones outside the working surface and retain an untreated reference. Prepare new towels according to their supplier's care instructions, rather than assuming packaging guarantees readiness.

Use the same compatible liquid, contact method and inspection lighting for each towel. Keep pressure and number of passes as consistent as practical. Change one factor at a time: comparing a new dry towel with an old lubricated one does not isolate towel performance.

Inspect the dry zones for lint, streaks and new visible lines. Record towel identity, preparation and conditions. Photographs are most useful when camera position and lighting remain stable. Keep the reference area untouched until the comparison is complete.

Use results to guide, not overpromise

A towel that performs poorly under the intended method should not progress to a customer's panel while the cause remains unresolved. Check contamination, laundering residue, damaged edges and the suitability of the towel construction for the task.

A favourable result supports using that towel with the tested process, but the vehicle still needs an appropriate test area. Different finishes and products can change the outcome. Keep accepted towels protected after the trial so careless storage does not invalidate the result. Repeat evaluation when the supplier, construction or laundry process changes materially.
