Streaks After Washing a Coated Car: Finding the Cause
Check shampoo residue, drying aids, towels and water quality before treating post-wash streaks as coating damage.

Reconstruct the wash
Note the shampoo dilution, rinsing method, drying towels and any added maintenance spray. Excess product, incomplete rinsing or contaminated towels can leave visible smears even when the underlying coating is sound.
Inspect in suitable light after the surface is dry. Determine whether streaks follow towel strokes, drip paths or a particular product application area.
Change one variable at a time
Test a compatible, simple cleaning process on a small area. Use clean tools and a thorough rinse without adding another gloss product. If the result improves, identify which part of the earlier routine caused residue rather than layering more chemicals over it.
Check whether towels were washed with products that leave fabric-softening or other residues. A towel that feels soft is not automatically clean enough for final finishing.
Distinguish residue from a persistent defect
If the marks remain after suitable cleaning, consider mineral deposits, coating high spots or polishing haze. These have different correction requirements. Avoid escalating to polishing before identifying the cause, particularly on a recent installation. Share the wash record and photographs with the installer so the next treatment addresses the actual source of the streaks.
