Determine where the damage is

A visible scratch may affect surface contamination, the coating, the clear coat or deeper layers. Appearance alone may not establish its depth. Clean the area appropriately and inspect before attempting correction.

Do not use a fingernail, key or abrasive demonstration to test hardness. Such tests can worsen damage without providing a reliable repair plan.

Match the repair to the defect

Light marks may be improved through a controlled professional process, but polishing can remove coating locally and some clear coat beneath it. Deep scratches may need repair or may be best left partly visible to preserve the finish.

The rest of the vehicle does not automatically need recoating because one panel is corrected. Consider the product system, repair boundaries and the condition of surrounding areas.

Prevent repeat damage

Identify the likely source: dry wiping, contaminated wash media, brush contact or physical impact. Correcting the surface without changing that process can lead to the same result again. Record any local polishing and reapplication, including the new aftercare dates. A useful repair improves the damage within sensible limits and restores a documented coating system where it was disturbed.
