Account for stockout periods when forecasting coating demand, distinguishing unobserved interest, delayed orders and actual sales.

Recorded sales are limited by availability. If a coating is out of stock, zero sales during that period do not establish zero demand. A forecast built only from completed orders can underestimate the quantity needed after supply returns.
Record when the SKU was available, partially available or unavailable. Distinguish a website listing that accepted backorders from one that could not be purchased. Keep customer requests and abandoned quotes where they can be captured reliably without treating every inquiry as a confirmed order.
In an illustrative month, a product sells 100 units during the first two weeks and is unavailable for the next two. Dividing 100 by the full month understates the observed selling rate while available. Doubling it to 200, however, is still an assumption about the missing period rather than a measured result.
Some customers may buy another SKU, wait, or leave the channel. When stock returns, a short spike can include delayed orders. Separating backlog from new demand prevents that recovery spike from inflating the ongoing forecast.
Seasonality and promotions can also change demand during the missing period. Use comparable available periods cautiously and document the assumptions.
Show recorded sales alongside availability days and known backlog. Use a plausible range for unobserved demand rather than silently replacing it with zero or an optimistic estimate. Review the range once stock is consistently available again.
For a coating distributor, the practical lesson is to connect inventory records with sales analysis. A low-sales SKU may need better marketing, but it may also have been impossible to buy. Establish which explanation the records support before reducing its next order or judging the launch unsuccessful.
