Decorative and PVD Stainless Finishes Before Nano Coating

Coloured or decorative stainless steel presents a surface system beyond the base metal. Confirm its identity before selecting cleaners, preparation methods or an additional coating.

Obtain the finish information

Ask the component supplier whether the surface is PVD-treated, lacquered, painted or finished by another method. Keep the care instructions and finish reference available. Colour and reflectivity alone do not identify the treatment.

Test only an approved process

Confirm compatibility with the actual decorative layer, including the preparation product. Do not use bare-stainless polishing or stripping methods by assumption. A discreet test should be evaluated after curing for colour, sheen and uniformity under the installation’s normal lighting.

Preserve the design intent

If treatment is approved, document the exact combination and aftercare. Keep cleaners and tools consistent across adjacent panels to avoid uneven appearance. If compatibility remains uncertain, retain the manufacturer’s established care routine and exclude the surface from coating. Any later repair should be assessed for the decorative finish as well as the metal beneath it.
