Bare Stainless Steel or a Factory-Coated Finish?

A stainless-looking appliance or panel may have a factory layer above the metal. That exposed layer determines what preparation and additional coating can safely be considered.

Check the product specification

Look for anti-fingerprint, clear-coated or decorative finishes in the manufacturer’s care documents. Keep the model or component details available. Do not use aggressive solvents or abrasion to test whether the surface is bare metal.

Confirm compatibility with the top layer

Ask the coating supplier about the identified factory finish and the proposed cleaning process. Approval for bare stainless steel does not automatically cover that finish. An appropriate test should be performed on the actual surface system, not on an unrelated bare-metal sample.

Preserve the manufacturer’s care routine

If an added treatment is not confirmed suitable, maintain the existing finish as directed and exclude it from the coating scope. If approved, document the exact combination and aftercare. Future cleaners should know that a stainless appearance does not mean ordinary metal polish or a strong degreaser is acceptable.
