Salt and Chloride Exposure on Coated Stainless Steel

Stainless steel in salty environments needs an application and maintenance plan suited to that exposure.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Stainless steel in salty environments needs an application and maintenance plan suited to that exposure. A nano coating does not make the material universally immune to corrosion.

Describe the real environment

Tell the supplier whether the component is indoors, outdoors, coastal or near other sources of salt. Record sheltered joints and areas where deposits remain. The metal grade, finish and component design also belong in the assessment.

Keep cleaning in the plan

Use the material manufacturer’s and coating supplier’s approved routine to remove contamination. Do not assume that rain reaches every detail or that water beading proves a deposit-free surface. Follow any required rinsing and drying steps and inspect accessible crevices without dismantling components unnecessarily.

Escalate recurring changes

Photograph staining or deterioration and record recent exposure and cleaning. Seek a metal specialist’s assessment when needed, particularly for functional or structural components. The choice to coat should follow an understanding of the material and its condition. It should not be used to justify unsuitable stainless steel for a demanding location.

Read grade and coating decisions and Outokumpu’s corrosion guidance.
