QUARTZ99 vs a Hydrophobic Top Coat: Different Roles

Understand why a non-hydrophobic base coat and a water-repellent top coat should be selected and evaluated using different criteria.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Water behaviour describes the outside

Water droplets interact with the outermost surface. A top coat or maintenance product can therefore change beading without proving the condition of a layer underneath. QUARTZ99 is explicitly described as non-hydrophobic on its own, so a weak beading result is not by itself evidence that it has failed.

Keep product purpose separate from visible demonstrations. A base coat and a maintenance top coat are not interchangeable simply because both belong to a ceramic coating system.

Choose by system design

Specify the compatible substrate, intended finish and named products. Confirm application order and intercoat timing with NANOLAB. Installation requirements also differ: QUARTZ99 requires a certified installer and controlled conditions.

Avoid inferring deposited thickness or scratch-proof performance from the quartz label. Those claims require suitable evidence for the exact system.

Diagnose maintenance correctly

If the completed vehicle loses water repellency, inspect and clean the outer surface first. Road film, minerals or topper wear may explain the change. Do not assume the base needs removal merely because the top surface behaves differently. Use the QUARTZ99 information together with the selected top-coat instructions to decide whether cleaning, maintenance or a larger intervention is appropriate.
