Protecting Raised Body Lines while Refining Adjacent Paint

Plan refinement around raised body lines using surface assessment and suitable tooling rather than extending a flat-panel polishing method automatically.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A raised body line changes the tool’s contact geometry and can be more difficult to assess than the broad panel beside it. A polishing plan should identify these features before correction begins.

Map sensitive geometry

Inspect edges, ridges, previous repairs and narrow transitions. Use appropriate paint assessment and service information. Do not treat a single nearby thickness reading as proof that every point on the feature has the same correction allowance.

Choose a supported approach

Select suitable tools and methods for the actual geometry. Where protective masking is appropriate, use compatible materials and understand its limits. Tape does not turn an unsuitable technique into a safe one or establish the paint thickness underneath.

Area Decision
Broad adjacent panel Accepted representative polishing process
Raised feature Separate assessment and suitable method
Uncertain repair Further inspection or restricted scope

Inspect boundaries deliberately

After the supported refinement and residue removal, check whether appearance changes across the protected or differently treated areas. Do not chase uniformity by repeatedly working the most uncertain feature.

Document the stopping point

If a defect remains outside the justified correction scope, record it and explain the limitation to the customer. A preserved finish with a known residual mark can be preferable to unnecessary material removal.

The objective is a coherent accepted result across the vehicle, achieved with methods appropriate to each zone. Good planning makes those differences intentional rather than discovering them only after a difficult edge has already been overworked.
