A full polishing range.
From cutting and one-step correction to final finishing.
Separate material sitting on the paint from damage within it and use a small compatible cleaning test before planning abrasive correction.

A scuff from contact with another object can contain transferred material as well as damage to the vehicle’s finish. The visible colour or streak does not reveal the full depth of the problem. Clean diagnosis should precede compounding.
Wash the area appropriately and inspect it dry. Look for raised residue, displaced material, chips or exposed layers. A photograph may help document the starting condition but cannot establish the available clear coat.
Do not use a fingernail test as a precise measurement of scratch depth or a guarantee that polishing is safe.
Where transfer is suspected, use a product and method approved for the paint and any existing protection. Work a small area and follow the instructions.
Avoid household abrasives and improvised solvents. A substance that removes the transferred colour can also affect the underlying finish or neighbouring materials.
Once removable material is gone, inspect the actual paint. The area may need only cleaning, a conservative polish, or professional repair depending on what is revealed.
Do not assume that removing the coloured streak means all damage has disappeared. Equally, do not continue abrasive work simply because the original scuff looked severe.
If a supported polish test is appropriate, assess useful improvement and finish quality after residue removal. Leave defects that cannot be addressed within the paint’s limits.
For an existing coating, include restoration of the affected protective system in the plan where required. Local abrasion is not automatically compatible with leaving protection untouched.
The efficient approach is sequential: identify and remove suitable transfer, inspect the substrate, then decide on correction. That avoids using heavy compound to answer a cleaning question and gives the owner a clearer account of the damage that actually remains.
