Investigate contact-angle changes caused by dosing-needle carryover before attributing them to a difference between coating samples.
Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The water drop used in a contact-angle test passes through a delivery system before it reaches the coating. Residue in that system can change the test liquid or its transfer. A clean-looking panel does not compensate for an uncontrolled dosing path.
Identify the reservoir, syringe, tubing and needle used for the measurement. Record whether the system previously handled another liquid. Follow the instrument manufacturer’s cleaning and replacement procedure; an improvised rinse may leave its own residue.
Avoid touching the needle to a coated specimen unless the approved method requires that contact. If contact occurs unexpectedly, mark the observation and inspect the dosing system before continuing through the sample series.
Measure a stable reference using the same liquid and documented method. If its result changes after the suspect sample, investigate the delivery path and instrument conditions before concluding that all later specimens have changed.
| Observation | Next question |
|---|---|
| Only one sample changes | Is its local surface different? |
| Reference and later samples change | Did liquid delivery or measurement conditions change? |
| Irregular drop release | Is the needle or dosing procedure compromised? |
After the prescribed cleaning or replacement, repeat the reference check and any affected measurements. Retain the original results with a reason for invalidation rather than silently deleting them.
This control does not prove the coating is uniform or that the instrument is fully calibrated. It addresses one specific source of contamination. For a defensible report, include dosing equipment, liquid identity, cleaning procedure and the reference result alongside the contact-angle values.
