Silica, Silanes and Siloxanes in Nano Ceramic Coating Claims

Read silica, silane and siloxane claims without confusing ingredient names or percentages with the measured performance of a finished nano ceramic coating.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Silica, silanes and siloxanes are related to coating chemistry but are not interchangeable product descriptions. A buyer does not need the full proprietary recipe to ask a useful question: what does the composition statement actually describe, and how does it relate to the finished coating’s intended function?

Distinguish a chemical term from a performance claim

Raw-material documentation from Evonik describes silanes used for functions such as surface modification, adhesion promotion and network formation. Those roles provide technical context, but they do not establish the performance of an unidentified finished product.

Avoid assuming that the presence of one named ingredient guarantees a particular gloss, hardness, durability or surface compatibility.

Ask about the percentage basis

If a product advertises a percentage of silica or solids, ask what is measured or calculated, whether it refers to the liquid formulation or another basis, and which method supports the value. Non-volatile content, a raw-material specification and a cured-film composition are not automatically equivalent figures.

Do not compare two percentages until their definitions are compatible. A higher number with an unclear basis is not a meaningful purchasing advantage.

Keep documentation roles clear

Technical information should explain use and supported properties. Safety documentation addresses hazards and handling; it should not be treated as a complete formulation disclosure or a performance certificate. Ask the supplier which document supports the particular claim you need to evaluate.

Respect proprietary information while requiring understandable evidence for advertised outcomes.

Judge the finished system

Evaluate preparation, application, cured appearance and maintenance on representative surfaces. Use relevant test results to support specific requirements. Chemistry terminology can help explain why a product was designed a certain way, but the final decision should rest on what the supplied formula demonstrably does under its approved conditions. That is a stronger basis for selecting nano ceramic coating than ranking bottles by a chemical name or an unexplained percentage.
