Measuring a Nano Coating on Metal: Confirm the Gauge Can Answer the Question

A thickness reading is useful only within a suitable measurement method. Confirm substrate, coating system and instrument capability before treating a paint-gauge number as nano-film evidence.

Define the layer to be assessed

Record whether the component already has paint, plating or another finish beneath the new treatment. State which layer or total system the measurement is intended to describe. Do not silently assign every reading to the latest application.

Review the instrument capability

Use the gauge manufacturer’s method for the actual substrate and measurement range. DeFelsko describes different instruments and principles for different coating applications. The existence of a displayed number does not establish that a particular very thin layer can be resolved meaningfully.

Use an appropriate reference

Follow the relevant checking and measurement procedure and record the locations. Keep before-and-after readings only where the method supports that comparison. A tiny numerical difference should not be called film thickness without a valid interpretation.

State uncertainty honestly

If the instrument cannot answer the layer question, obtain a suitable method or say that thickness was not established. Keep product consumption, visible appearance and water behaviour separate; none automatically supplies the missing film measurement.

Frequently asked question

Can a common automotive paint gauge always measure an individual nano coating?

No. Confirm the actual instrument and layer system with the manufacturer. Do not claim a resolved thickness without a suitable method.
