Hydrophobic Coating Photos: Keep Drop Size Consistent

Hydrophobic coating photographs are easier to compare when the water application is consistent.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Hydrophobic coating photographs are easier to compare when the water application is consistent. Different drop sizes, viewing angles and panel orientations can make similar surfaces look different. A photograph can document visible water behaviour, but a dramatic bead shape alone is not a calibrated measurement or a durability result.

Control the image-making process

Use a clean surface with a recorded treatment and cure history. Apply the same liquid through a repeatable method, keeping the intended drop volume or application process consistent. Do not compare a fine spray on one panel with large drops poured onto another and attribute every visual difference to the coating.

Keep camera position, lighting, focus and panel orientation stable. Record the interval between placing water and taking the image. Avoid selecting only the most attractive drop from one sample while showing an unselected field of drops on the other.

KRUSS describes contact angle as a measure of wetting and explains that image-based analysis depends on the drop contour and surface baseline. A casual angled photograph does not automatically provide the geometry required for a valid numerical angle.

Keep the conclusion proportionate

Label ordinary photographs as observations under the stated conditions. If numerical contact angle is needed, use suitable equipment and a validated procedure for the surface, with repeated measurements and reported variability.

Do not translate a bead photograph into proof of scratch resistance, thickness or remaining service life. Those are different questions requiring different evidence. Retain the original images and setup notes so later comparisons use the same conditions. Consistent photography makes modest observations more informative without presenting them as a laboratory result they were never designed to produce.
