Handover a Coated Yacht to a New Crew

Transfer product identity, treated areas and maintenance records when crew responsibilities change.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A crew change can break continuity in the care of a coated yacht. The new team may know the vessel is protected without knowing which products or surfaces are involved. A structured handover preserves the information needed for routine care and technical questions.

Transfer the surface and product record

Provide treated-area maps, exact product identities and relevant dates. Include repairs or component replacements that changed the original installation. Keep excluded areas visible. A broad statement that all exterior surfaces are coated is not an adequate substitute for the actual scope.

Explain the working care guidance

Make current instructions accessible to the crew and identify the contact for uncertainty. Review the planned cleaning routine rather than assuming it matches the previous team's process. For example, a newly introduced maintenance product should be assessed for the installed system before it becomes routine.

Preserve observations and open issues

Include recent condition records, unresolved questions and agreed follow-up. Separate factual observations from the outgoing crew's proposed explanations. Give one person ownership of future updates. A useful handover lets the new team maintain continuity without relying on informal recollection from several suppliers. It also makes later support more effective because the product history, care process and changes to the vessel remain connected in one understandable record.

A new-crew coating handover

Provide the zone map, installed products, treatment dates, current care information and known repair or maintenance history. Walk the new crew through treated and excluded areas, especially where different finishes sit next to each other.

Ask the team to identify its planned cleaning products and methods so uncertain substitutions can be reviewed. Keep support contacts accessible aboard and in the management record. Do not rely on the outgoing crew's informal statement that the whole yacht is coated. A useful handover preserves the actual treatment scope and gives the incoming team a practical way to maintain it and report observations without guessing what was previously applied.
