Graphene Platelet Size: Ask for a Distribution, Not a Hero Number

A single particle-size number can make a graphene additive look easier to understand than it is.

A single particle-size number can make a graphene additive look easier to understand than it is. Before using that number in a purchasing decision, ask what dimension it describes and how the supplier obtained it.

Separate the measurements

Lateral size and thickness are different dimensions. A statement about width does not establish layer count, and an average does not show the spread of a population. Request the measurement method, the reported statistic and whether the information describes the raw additive or the finished dispersion. Keep these distinctions in the sample record.

Connect the data to the job

Suppose two suppliers report the same average width but use different preparation and measurement methods. Treat the values as potentially non-comparable until the methods are explained. For a coating project, the next step is an application trial and inspection of the resulting film, not selecting whichever number sounds more advanced. A raw-material measurement is useful input, not a product verdict.

A specification is strongest when the dimension, method, sample state and variability are visible together. Ask for those details before turning a size claim into advertising.
