A narrow recess may allow the edge of a pad to enter while preventing the face from contacting the paint evenly. Fine cut does not solve that geometry by being less aggressive than compound. Confirm controlled access before choosing a machine process.
Check pad, backing-plate and machine-body clearance through the planned movement. Look at the base of the recess and its shoulders separately. If the pad bridges the centre or loads only a narrow edge, the working footprint is unsuitable for a uniform pass.
Do not force the foam to fit by applying excessive pressure. Nor should a very soft pad be assumed safe if the backing plate remains close to the surface or the assembly becomes unstable.
A compatible smaller tool, a supported pad profile or suitable hand application may be options. Each requires its own test and instructions. If no controlled method is available, retaining light marks can be the correct scope decision.
Use masking where appropriate to define adjacent boundaries, but remember that it does not make uncontrolled edge contact acceptable. Keep textured trim and delicate seals out of the abrasive working area.
After compatible residue removal, compare the deepest accessible part with the surrounding raised areas. A shiny shoulder with unchanged marks in the recess suggests uneven contact. Repeating the same pass can overwork the shoulder without solving the centre.
Record the accepted method and any retained defect on the job map. This prevents a later inspector from returning with the same unsuitable pad to ‘finish’ an intentionally limited area.
The goal is consistent, controlled improvement within the available access. Fine-cut labels describe a product’s role; they do not remove the need to match the tool’s physical footprint to the surface. Geometry should determine the workable method before the operator decides how much more polishing to apply.
