Coating Instrument Calibration Range: Do Not Assume It Covers Every Displayed Value

An instrument may display values outside the range covered by its calibration or validated method. Check the relevant range before using a reading to accept a coating sample or compare products.

The key distinction

The certificate and method should identify the functions and conditions assessed. A working display is not evidence that every possible operating point has the required measurement capability.

Practical checks

  1. Match the intended measurement range to the calibration scope.
  2. Review uncertainty and method suitability at the relevant values.
  3. Obtain clarification or appropriate service when the scope is insufficient.

Example

Illustrative example: a laboratory uses a scale near a load that was not covered by the relevant verification plan. The number may appear stable, but the evidence for that decision range still needs review.

Scope and limits

Do not extrapolate performance from a convenient calibration point without justification. Use the instrument manufacturer's guidance and qualified metrology review.
