Recognise when dullness needs paint-system assessment and why polishing cannot rebuild peeling, missing or structurally failed clear coat.

Dullness can come from contamination, oxidation, fine defects or paint-system failure. These conditions do not share one remedy. Polishing can improve suitable sound finishes, but it cannot rebuild clear coat that is peeling or missing.
Look for flaking edges, cracking, exposed underlying layers and unstable areas. Record previous repairs and the extent of the affected surface.
Do not treat a brief improvement in gloss as proof that the paint is structurally sound. Lubricating residue can change appearance while the underlying problem remains.
Heavy compound should not be used to find out how far a failing finish can be pushed. If the surface is unstable or its identity is uncertain, stop and obtain a qualified paint assessment.
A coating is not a replacement for missing clear coat and should not be promised as a permanent repair for delamination.
A vehicle may contain both sound paint and failed sections. Map them separately and agree what work is appropriate on each.
Protect unstable boundaries from incidental contact during other detailing work. The fact that a neighbouring panel polishes normally does not validate the damaged area.
Explain whether the issue appears to require cleaning, cautious correction or refinishing evaluation. Avoid promising restoration based on a single image or a product demonstration on another vehicle.
Document exclusions before beginning the rest of the service. This prevents an owner from expecting a complete cosmetic renewal where the substrate cannot support it.
The professional decision is sometimes to decline abrasive correction on a particular panel. That is not a lack of polishing skill. It recognises the difference between refining an existing sound finish and repairing a coating system that no longer exists in a serviceable condition.
