Clay Lubricant Residue Before Polishing: Complete the Removal Step

Mechanical decontamination adds its own product history to the panel. Remove the lubricant as instructed before assessing the next polishing or coating step.

Keep the sequence explicit

Record the lubricant and clay or synthetic media used. Some products require a particular removal or wash process. Do not assume that a liquid marketed as a detail spray leaves the same surface condition as another lubricant.

Assess the surface after cleanup

Dry and inspect the cleaned area for remaining contamination and any marring introduced during the task. The smoothness felt immediately after lubrication is not the final condition. Choose correction from the dry inspection rather than automatically adding heavy cut compound.

Protect the next test

Use clean pads and towels after completing the removal stage. If a polishing trial behaves unexpectedly, check residual lubricant before judging the compound. Keep the decontamination and finishing records linked so a variable introduced earlier is not lost.

Frequently asked question

Can every clay lubricant be used as a final coating prep?

No. Its intended role and residue-removal requirements must be checked separately from the coating’s preparation instructions.
