Understand why ceramic coating cannot repair pitted chrome, how to distinguish deposits from plating damage and when restoration should come first.

Ceramic coating does not replace missing chrome plating or reattach a peeling finish. A bright coating demonstration on sound metal cannot establish what will happen on a corroded component. Before buying a treatment, decide whether the visible problem is removable contamination, permanent surface damage or failing plating.
Wash a small area with a cleaner approved for the finish and inspect it when dry. Dirt and dried residue can exaggerate a defect, but cleaning should not require grinding down the surrounding surface. Avoid scraping a questionable spot to discover what lies underneath.
Look for a repeatable difference: residue that lifts during permitted cleaning, a depression that remains, or a raised edge where the finish is separating. Photographs with side lighting are useful for a restorer. If you cannot identify the condition confidently, stop before polishing or coating the whole part.
For an intact finish with removable deposits, complete compatible cleaning and then assess a coating test area. For stable cosmetic damage that the owner accepts, document the remaining defects and ask whether coating the surrounding sound finish is appropriate. For active corrosion, blistering or peeling, obtain a restoration assessment first.
This decision prevents a common misunderstanding: a temporary improvement in reflection after cleaning is not proof that corrosion beneath the plating has been repaired. A coating cannot validate the structural condition of a wheel, bracket or other functional component either.
Do not test coating on a valuable original part simply because a product is transparent. Ask the restorer whether the treatment would complicate later stripping, refinishing or inspection. A spare matching part is a better trial surface when preservation matters.
Record the defects that will remain visible, the approved treatment area and the planned inspection interval. If restoration is selected, wait for the refinisher’s preparation and aftercare instructions before adding another product. Ceramic coating can only be evaluated as a treatment over an appropriate finish; it is not a shortcut around plating repair.
