A boat can contain original gelcoat and repairs completed at different times with different materials. Their appearance may be similar while their preparation and subsequent-treatment requirements differ. Map the repairs before applying one ceramic coating process across the entire visible surface.
Ask for repair dates, material details and the repairer's curing and maintenance instructions. Mark known locations on photographs. Keep uncertain areas identified as unknown rather than assuming that an invisible repair has the same specification as the surrounding finish.
Inspect the clean, dry surface for colour variation, texture, porosity and existing defects. A coating may alter the appearance of each area differently without being the original cause of the mismatch. Record that baseline before any application trial.
Confirm the preparation process for each substrate condition with the relevant suppliers. Avoid stronger cleaning or additional abrasion solely to make one repair behave like another. Unstable or inadequately cured material needs a repair assessment before protection.
Where the combination is approved, test representative areas and inspect after the required cure. View repair boundaries under diffuse and direct light where practical. Agreement on the dry appearance is more useful than judging each wet test patch in isolation.
Record the accepted limitations and any surfaces excluded from treatment. Maintain the boat according to the combined approved routine, with special attention to repaired areas that require different care. If a later change appears, use the repair map to guide investigation. Calendar age of the coating alone cannot explain behaviour across a vessel whose underlying surface history varies from panel to panel.
