Building a Repeatable Low-Angle Inspection Station for Glass

Build a repeatable glass-inspection arrangement using fixed light positions, backgrounds and viewing locations to investigate faint coating streaks.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Faint streaks on glass can appear or disappear as an inspector moves. A useful inspection station makes those changes repeatable instead of leaving acceptance to whichever viewing position happens to look best.

Define the viewing arrangement

Support the glass using an appropriate handling system. Establish fixed viewing locations and place a linear light at a reproducible low angle to the inspected face. Add a controlled background that makes the relevant streak or haze visible. Keep the arrangement compatible with safe glass handling and clear walkways.

Inspect a known acceptable panel and a panel containing the relevant defect. The station should distinguish them under the agreed method. If both look identical, the setup is not answering the intended question.

Use more than one optical view

View Typical purpose
Light reflected from the face Locate wiping lines and surface unevenness
View through the glass Assess clarity against a defined background
Reverse-face inspection Check whether the mark belongs to the other side

Run a repeatability check

Have two trained inspectors review coded panels using the same positions. Record disagreements by location and defect type. Adjust the instruction or reference examples before increasing the inspection volume; adding more inspections to an ambiguous method only creates more inconsistent decisions.

Keep acceptance product-specific

The arrangement is an internal visual method unless it follows a specified standard. Do not present its pass result as a universal optical certification. Agree the relevant appearance requirement and include the normal installed viewing condition.

Once established, record light location, background, panel orientation and viewing distance. A photograph of the station is useful for restoring it after maintenance or a layout change.
